Job Postings

Applications are invited for a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Experiential Education in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. This is a full-time, three-year rolling term appointment under the Contract Academic Staff: Teaching Agreement, with both administrative and teaching responsibilities. The areas of teaching expertise are open. Research and service activities are encouraged.

Experiential education is a critical component of the professional pharmacy curriculum. In the new PharmD program, an additional 20 weeks of clinical placements will be required over our current BSc program. Thus, many new sites will need to be identified and developed. It is recognized that there will be substantial administrative time commitments during the initial development phase, and during this time, teaching load will be minimized.

The Director will be responsible for development of both the curriculum and delivery of experiential education in the faculty’s undergraduate programs. Specific responsibilities with respect to curriculum development will include identification of learning outcomes at both the program and individual rotation levels, and preparation of student and preceptor manuals and other curricular materials.

In addition, the Director will develop an implementation plan and oversee delivery of experiential learning, with particular emphasis on site identification and preparation, preceptor training, quality assurance mechanisms, and student evaluation. Operational aspects will be handled largely by regional coordinators, but some travel is expected. Administrative assistance will be provided as needed.

The successful candidate will have a pharmacy (preferably PharmD) degree with residency or equivalent experience. The applicant must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the Alberta College of Pharmacists.

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences offers one of the strongest Pharmacy degree programs in Canada. The faculty annually admits 130 student pharmacists, and currently enrolls 50 graduate students. The University of Alberta has approximately 37,000 students. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborative research with other disciplines within the faculty and university as well as externally.

The University of Alberta is located in Edmonton, a vibrant, cosmopolitan city of 1 million and the provincial capital. This friendly city offers a rich cultural life and diverse recreational opportunities. The campus is located adjacent to one of the largest municipal park systems in North America and is approximately 3.5 hours by car from the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Applications will be reviewed beginning December 15, 2009 and will continue until the position is filled. Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, a description of research and teaching interests, and the names and addresses of three referees. Electronic applications are preferred.
